Dr. Sharif Shams Imon from Macao delivers an illustrated talk to our architecture students.

Dr. Sharif Shams Imon, Director of the Heritage Studies Centre has a PhD in Urban Conservation and has taught at universities in Bangladesh and Hong Kong. He has published book chapters, journal articles and conference papers on Cultural heritage management and is an author of three training manuals for professionals, one of which has been translated into seven different languages. Dr. Imon has carried out World Heritage evaluation and monitoring missions in various countries in Asia.

The presentation was based on one of the major festivals called the ‘Feast of the Drunken’, that connects the city of Macao to its maritime past,. This has also been included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List of China in 2010. It was in-depth analysis of both tourism and urban conservation factors affecting the festival, presenting the views of concerned community and the government departments and discussed the challenges of how to safeguard the intangible dimensions linked to the fluid cultural spaces of a traditional festival within a historic city and have a meaningful experience.

Dr. Archana Mantri, Professor, Chitkara University presided over the function. The function was also attended Prof. IJS Bakshi, Director, CSPA, Prof. Surjit Bais, Principal, CSPA, Dr. C M Bhan, Head of Department, Chitkara School of Hospitality, Prof. Kiran Joshi, Dean, Chitkara School of advanced studies and faculty and students of CSPA.

Chitkara School of Planning and Architecture had a presentation and Closing ceremony for the Workshop, “”Interpretation and Presentation of Architectural Heritage at Qila Mubarak, Patiala”. Six groups each consisting of students of CSPA and Institute of Tourism studies, Macao presented their study on the Qila complex and discussed their plans on interpretation and site management of the site. Later the students were felicitated for their work. Dr. Madhu Chitkara, Vice Chancellor , Chitkara University. The Workshop Co-ordinators Dr. Sharif Shams Imon, Director, Institute of Tourism studies, Macao and Ar. Niyati Jigyasu, Associate professor, CSPA also received certificates of appreciation along with the associate faculty Ar. Surabhi Kataria, Assistant professor, CSPA.

The best group received special gifts from Dr. Sharif Shams Imon. The event was also attended by Wig Com. RS Gill, Vice-President, Chitkara University, Dr. SC Sharma, Registrar, Chitkara University, Prof. IJS Bakshi, Director, CSPA, Prof. Surjit Bais, Principal, CSPA, Prof. Kiran Joshi, Dean, Chitkara School of Advanced studies and faculty and students of CSPA. Dr. Madhu Chitkara congratulated everyone for the success of the workshop and stressed upon the importance and relevance of working in multi disciplinary fields in today’s scenario.
