Chitkara University Nursing Students Champion Cancer Awareness at CHC Kalomajra
In observance of World Cancer Day, students from the B.Sc. Nursing 2nd semester at Chitkara School of Health Sciences, Chitkara University, conducted an impactful awareness talk at the Community Health Centre (CHC) Kalomajra. The initiative was part of the university’s continued commitment to strengthening community health education and aligned with the global campaign to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and accessible treatment.
The awareness session opened with an introduction to the significance of World Cancer Day, underscoring the urgency of united efforts to fight cancer. Nursing students took centre stage, delivering insightful presentations on the causes and risk factors associated with various types of cancer, highlighting common symptoms, and outlining current treatment options. Emphasis was placed on the value of early detection, the benefits of regular screenings, and the importance of lifestyle choices such as balanced nutrition, physical activity, and avoidance of tobacco.
The session was made interactive with an open discussion segment where community members raised questions and shared concerns. The nursing students, guided by their academic mentors, addressed these queries with clarity and sensitivity, helping to dispel myths and misunderstandings surrounding cancer. Attendees were also introduced to various government-led health schemes and screening programs designed to assist those at risk.
To reinforce key messages, educational handouts and informative charts were shared with the participants. Real-life case studies were used to illustrate the life-saving potential of timely diagnosis and medical intervention. The event concluded with a pledge by the community to become ambassadors of awareness and support for those affected by cancer.
The success of the event was evident in the engaged participation of the community and the appreciation expressed by the CHC Kalomajra staff. It was a testament to the growing role of Chitkara University’s nursing students as future healthcare professionals, not only in hospitals but also within communities where awareness can lead to real impact.
Through this initiative, the students not only enhanced their practical learning in community health nursing but also exemplified the values of compassion, leadership, and service that form the core of healthcare. The event reinforced Chitkara University’s mission to bridge the gap between medical knowledge and public understanding, ensuring that vital health education reaches the people who need it most.
