World Theatre Day celebrated at Chitkara University

The Department of Office of Student Affairs, Chitkara University, Punjab, in collaboration with Chitkara School of Planning and Architecture, celebrated World Theatre Day by organising a theatre workshop. The workshop was conducted by eminent art director, Mr. Satnam Laddi.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Neelam Verma, Dean, Office of Student Affairs, Chitkara University, Punjab, who welcomed everyone present at the occasion and talked about the history and importance of World Theatre Day. She told everyone about the illustrious festival of Chitkara University, ‘Rangrezz’, which is the largest theatre festival of the nation and partner of Asia’s largest cultural festival, ‘Mood Indigo’.

She then went on to introduce the guest of honour and resource person for the workshop- Mr. Satnam Laddi, known for art direction and an assistant director in the Punjabi film industry. Laddi is an alumnus of government college of arts Chandigarh where he has trained as a painter with specialization in creative-composition and portraiture. Laddi began his career in the film industry from the movie Saade Aale and then Jionde Aan, he also worked as an assistant director in the film Jamraud.

He began the workshop by providing some tips and tricks that one could keep in mind while being on the stage. Rather than opting for the traditional lecture method, Mr. Laddi taught the students in a practical way and interacted with them. He divided the students into groups and made each team prepare a play. Putting their creative and theatrical skills tow work, students prepared various plays on a variety of genres like comedy, horror, satire, etc.

After each performance, Mr. Laddi gave insights to the students to improve their acts and get opportunities in the field. After the performances, the students were given a presentation on the basics of filmmaking and its future. At the end of the workshop, students raised their questions. The guest of honour patiently answered all the questions and cleared their queries. He thanked everyone for being great listeners and participants and congratulated everyone for their performances. The students got to take back home the exquisite nuances of theatre from this enriching workshop.
