The Department of Clinical Psychology organised a teaching session on “Substance Use: Causes and Treatment” for third-year MBBS students at Rajindra Hospital, Patiala. The session aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of substance use disorders, their underlying causes and the approaches used for assessment, treatment and relapse prevention.

Dr. Ayushi Gaur and Divyanshu led the session, introducing participants to substance use disorders through the DSM-5 and ICD-11 frameworks. The discussion covered the biological, psychological and social factors associated with substance use, helping students understand how multiple factors can contribute to the development and continuation of such disorders.

The session also focused on identifying early warning signs and understanding different treatment approaches, including medication and counselling-based interventions. Participants were introduced to the importance of timely identification and appropriate clinical support in helping individuals manage substance use and work towards recovery.

Case discussions and practical examples were used to connect classroom concepts with real-world clinical situations. These activities encouraged students to consider the complexities involved in assessment and patient care while reinforcing the importance of a non-judgmental, empathetic and patient-centred approach.

A total of 34 students participated in the session. The interactive format gave students an opportunity to engage with the subject, discuss clinical scenarios and strengthen their understanding of substance use disorders.

Such teaching sessions provide medical students with exposure to important aspects of mental health and clinical psychology, supporting a more holistic understanding of patient care and the role of interdisciplinary approaches in healthcare.
