Dr. Vandna Sharma from the Centre for Liquid Crystal Research at Chitkara University has co-authored an international research study examining new methods of controlling laser emission using liquid crystals. The study, titled “Light Control of Lasing from Liquid-Crystal Micro-Droplet Light Switch,” has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Advanced Photonics.

The research explores how liquid-crystal micro-droplets can be used to regulate lasing through ultrafast optical switching. Conducted in collaboration with scientists from the Jožef Stefan Institute, the University of Ljubljana and the University of Oxford, the study proposes a method in which light itself controls lasing behaviour through liquid crystal-based optical switches operating on nanosecond timescales.

Dr. Sharma’s work on the subject began during her doctoral research at Chitkara University under the DST INSPIRE Fellowship. She later continued her investigations during her postdoctoral research at the Jožef Stefan Institute, where part of the collaborative work was carried out.

The publication has also drawn attention in Slovenian media, reflecting the international nature of the collaboration and the involvement of research institutions across Europe and India.
The study adds to the research activity underway at Chitkara University’s Centre for Liquid Crystal Research, where faculty and scholars continue to work on topics related to liquid crystal physics and photonic applications.
