Padmashri Awardee and Dr. B.C. Roy National Awardee Dr. Devinder Singh Rana, Chairman, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi; has had a distinguished career in Medicine, and has been lauded world over for his pioneering work in Nephrology. His contributions towards Nephrology, Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation led him to be the President and Secretary of the Indian Society of Nephrology, where he founded the Indian Society of Hemodialysis (2002), to standardize the procedure of hemodialysis.
Recognizing his excellence Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society appointed him as Chairman of Board of Management in May 2011, where his passion for academics and research led him to establish the Ganga Ram Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research. He has received Dr. B.C. Roy National Award (2017) and Padma Shri Award (2009) by the Hon’ble President of India for his great contribution in his field. His services in promoting medical education, led him to be awarded the Tridecennial NBE Medical Teacher of Excellence Award (2012) and the Best DNB Teaching Hospital Award (2014) by the National Board of Examinations.
His passion remains making affordable, quality medical care accessible to rural population. His NGO, Parvati Education & Health Society for Rural India (2005) established Parvati Charitable Hospital (2007) in Dasmal, wherein for the first time a standalone hemodialysis unit was established at nominal cost to patients in remote hilly areas. The Government of Himachal Pradesh honored him with the Himachal Gaurav Award (2015).
The Indian Medical Association has conferred him with various awards and honors, Son of Soil Award (2007), National Award (2006), DMA Distinguished Service Award (2008), Vishisht Chikitsa Ratan (2012) and Distinguished Services Award (2011). The Indian Society of Nephrology conferred upon him the Fellowship of Indian Society of Nephrology. The Delhi Nephrology Society conferred him with Guru Dronacharya Award for ‘lifetime contribution’ to renal science education and promotion.
