The Department of Clinical Psychology conducted a social-emotional learning session titled “Why We Act the Way We Do” at the Elementary School, Kallomajra. The session aimed to help students understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions and behaviour and develop healthier ways of responding to everyday situations.

Ms. Alka Shaktan introduced the Thought–Emotion–Behaviour chain through storytelling and role-play, making the concepts accessible and engaging for the students. Through interactive activities, students explored how certain thoughts can influence feelings and, in turn, affect the way they respond to others.

The session also addressed how emotional reactions can sometimes lead to behaviours such as aggression or exclusion. Students were encouraged to recognise their emotions and understand how their responses can affect those around them.

A total of 19 students participated in the session and engaged in activities designed to encourage self-awareness and reflection. They learnt the importance of pausing before reacting and considering alternative ways to respond to challenging situations.

The session also focused on developing empathy, self-control and positive behaviour, helping students understand the value of respectful communication and healthy relationships. Such age-appropriate mental health and social-emotional learning initiatives can help children develop essential emotional skills and create more supportive interactions within school and community settings.
