Nurses’ Week celebrations support, honour ‘missioners of health’

As a part of the Nurses’ Week celebrations from May 6-12, 2019, Chitkara College of Nursing students took the ‘Nightingale’s Pledge’ to become a ‘missioner of health’ dedicated to serve the profession with care, compassion & commitment.

Like previous years, this year too the Nurses’ Week celebrations leading up to International Day of Nurses, was celebrated with great enthusiasm all through the week. The celebrations started with a Radio Talk on ‘Health for all’ under the guidance of Nursing Tutors – Mrs. Gurpreet Kaur & Mrs. Sandeep Kaur. Nursing students spoke about various services available at CHC, PHC, Sub Centre and Dispensary for Antenatal, Intranatal & Postnatal period. They also highlighted the amenities available for infants and children.

On Day-2, students unleashed the power of words with Chitkara University Toastmasters’ International Club, by hosting and participating in a Pictionary Competition. B.Sc. Nursing & Post Basic Nursing students participated enthusiastically, and students – Rubal emerged as the winner, while Shania & Babita shared the second spot contesting for ‘Best Speaker’.

The week-long celebrations also included various competitions – ‘Food and Veggie Carving’ Competition which had students preparing a variety of salads and jotting down useful tips from the Chef; ‘Tik Tok’ Competition which had students preparing comedy videos; ‘Insta Selfie’ Competition on the theme ‘Emotional Melodrama’ which had students all animated, and ‘Poster Painting’ Competition on the theme ‘Save Nature for better future’ which had some eye-catching views.

The final event for the week was a training workshop on ‘Building Gatekeepers: Training for Suicide Prevention’ organised by the Department of Psychiatry to provide the specialised knowledge and skills to identify and provide timely help to people with suicidal tendencies.

On the concluding day of the celebrations, the function started with motivating words from various eminent dignitaries who enlightened the student nurses on the importance of the profession they are about to enter and highlighted their moral responsibilities. Following this, an oath-taking ceremony was held where students took the ‘Nightingale’s Pledge’ to become a ‘missioner of health’ dedicated to serving the profession with care, compassion & commitment. Cultural events followed including various performances – a soul-wrenching act on rape and acid attack on women, ramp walk with a social message of religious equality; and competitions – solo singing, face-off dance competition, group dance competition. The celebrations concluded with the Annual Prize Distribution ceremony for meritorious student nurses.
