World Breastfeeding Week Celebration

World Breastfeeding Week was first celebrated in 1992 by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and is now observed in over 120 countries by UNICEF, WHO and their partners, including individuals, organisations, and governments. The initiative was undertaken by the government to ensure the safe coverage of all infants to attain the right to breastfeeding and hence boosts the immunity of the newborn.

In order to maintain the initiative laid by the government, Chitkara College of Nursing celebrated the 25th World Breastfeeding Week from 1st August to 7th August 2017 under the theme, “SUSTAINING BREASTFEEDING TOGETHER,” to make the concept of breastfeeding reach the level of compliance and ensure active awareness among all.

The theme opening on 1st August 2017 was done in order to mark the campaign generated by the health care providers upon the 4 major objectives, namely Inform, Anchor, Engage and Galvanise the spirit and promise to work together to achieve the sustainable spirit towards promoting breastfeeding in the first hour of birth always.

Followed by “Poster Display competition” was organised on 2nd August 2017, which had a proud moment of participation from various departments of Chitkara University, which laid the emphasis on the WABA theme, 2017 and the winners of the same were praised and certified.

Faculty of Chitkara College of Nursing also participated in rendering effective communicational coverage among surrounding areas by organising a “Radio Play” on Breastfeeding and its importance to the baby, mother and community.

In order to maintain the developmental goals and to ensure full coverage of breastfeeding, a community awareness talk was organised in the form of “Role play” and “Health Education” on the importance of breastfeeding, which was delivered among the people of Village Jhansla by the students of B.Sc Nursing 3rd year, Chitkara School of Health Sciences.

Concluding the week-long celebrations, an expert talk was delivered by Dr. Bhavneet Bharti, Professor, Advanced Paediatric Centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh and her team. They focused on “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together” and laid emphasis on the importance of feeding during the first hour of life, which would further help the newborn combat upcoming infections.

Let’s galvanise the importance of working together across the 4 Thematic Areas and anchor to recognise our role and the difference we would make within our area of work and engage all professionals to reach out to others to establish areas of common interest that is “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together”.
