Students study controlled day lighting during field trip

For learning about the lighting design curriculum, an educational trip was organized for our students at Government Museum and Corbusier Center.

A team of 15 students from Chitkara School of Planning and Architecture visited Government Museum, Sector 10, Chandigarh, and Le Corbusier Center, Sector 19, Chandigarh. As part of Lighting Design Curriculum, they studied controlled day lighting in a museum building as well as in a site office complex turned into exhibition gallery.

Te students learnt that lighting and day lighting controls are systems that adjust the amount of natural and artificial light in a room, based on its brightness, occupancy, and sometimes other factors.

They were explained by the faculty that accompanied them that good controls are critical to lighting design that incorporates both daylight and artificial light. They can improve both visual and thermal comfort while significantly decreasing energy use. For instance, occupancy-based shutoff alone can save lighting energy.

Successful design of lighting control is measured by testing visual comfort in the room during occupied times, and measuring the daily or monthly lighting energy use. The less energy required while still achieving comfort, the better. Controls systems are also measured by their reliability and ease of use for occupants and operations staff.

CSPA Faculty Member – Architect Abhishek Sharma organized and accompanied the students at the trip.
