Syllabus

The course analyses the key aspects of the European healthcare systems through interdisciplinary and multilevel governance approaches. The aim is to disseminate skills on health care and Universal Health Coverage in the European Union. The course aims to introduce the regulating principles and values of healthcare in the European Union. The sessions identify the characteristics of public health policies, assess the strengths and weaknesses of EU Member States, and analyze the recent developments in European health governance. Each topic addresses a sub-domain, offering a comprehensive picture of the health in the European Union, and providing an outlook on how health competencies are shared between the European Union and its Member States. The module adopts an interdisciplinary approach to explore the complexities entangled in the governance of national health systems within the EU. The course helps to understand how the EU integration process influences the healthcare systems of the Member States. More specifically, it explains how the spillover generated by the EU internal market influenced the functioning of the national healthcare systems. Special attention has been given to topics more pertinent to the latest trends in the Indian healthcare sector. Debating the public policies developed in the European context - and challenges hampering the inclusivity of European health politics - is considered a tool to empower professionals interested in developing strategies to respond to national and global health-related challenges.
