Future of Computer Science Engineering in 2022

An image with colourfull background with a chitkara university logo shows a student in red t-shirt holding a laptop.

Earlier when we heard the word computer, the first picture in our minds would be of a typical black-colored desktop with a flat screen, CPU, keyboard, and a little mouse. Over the years this picture has changed to laptops and tablets. In recent times this picture has transformed into a mobile phone. We are surrounded by computer technology all the time. From our mobile phones to cars and from buying clothes online to using Siri and Alexa, we are dependent on technology for everything. Computer Science is the core of all this and much more than just coding. It involves the analysis, testing, designing, and development of computer systems. The Covid pandemic and people working from home had a major impact on the technology industry. Every sector today involves computer technology in some or the other way which makes this field a preferable career choice for students.

The 21st century in itself has seen a technological revolution and so here are the major fields, trends, and scope for computer science in the year 2022.

Artificial Intelligence

The heart of Artificial intelligence (AI) is the machine code that mimics the human and animal brains. AI professionals create algorithms and programme machines to do human-like activities. The AI concepts will be extensively implemented in the coming days. Major AI breakthroughs are machine learning, digital manufacturing, speech recognition, etc. The major job profiles for candidates to apply in this field are Machine Learning Engineer, Senior Data Scientist, Deep Learning Engineer, Algorithm Engineer, etc. The salary for these job profiles can range anywhere from 3.4 to 24 LPA. A basic bachelor’s level degree is required for entry-level AI positions while further studies like master’s, PhD and experience lead to the best job opportunities in AI.

Cyber security

Our data is stored in different databases from time to time. From filling out forms in shopping malls to taking a 2-minute online survey, we provide and generate it everywhere. The data can be in different categories like Personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), personal information, government and industry operation system data, etc. Today data is the new currency and securing this currency is of utmost importance. Cyberattacks cause immense financial losses to individuals, companies, and governments. Cyber Security deals with preventing cyberthreats and attacks on computer systems and networks. Businesses today store data in the cloud and run a business online and thus a need for better protection is always in high demand. Cyber security experts work for these businesses, educational and financial institutes, computing and consulting firms and provide security for their data and networks. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required for good cyber security employment. The job profiles in this field are network security engineer, cyber security analyst, security architect, chief information security officer (CISO), etc. The average salary in cyber security in India can be between 3.6- and 16 LPA.

Bioinformatics

Post covid the medical and pharmaceutical industry has seen the biggest spike in its history. The biological data generated after the pandemic was huge. The genetic sequence data of the viruses itself was several zillion Tera Bytes. Bioinformatics is the key to the interpretation of this data. It is the link between computer science and biological science. A professional bioinformatician examines, preserves, and analyses biological data. They also create methodologies and software tools to hunt for patterns in the genetic materials such as DNA, Proteins, and RNA. Personalised medicine is the major scope for bioinformatics professionals in the coming years. Job profiles for the candidates in bioinformatics can be data scientist, computational biologist, Biostatistician, Biomedical researcher, etc. A bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics can be a good start in this career but a master’s or PhD is recommended. The average salary of candidates in this field is 4.8- 12LPA.

Robotics

Robotics is a field that involves the design, conception, manufacture, and operation of robots. The whole objective of this field is to create intelligent machines that can assist humans and reduce their efforts. It’s a multidisciplinary field that involves computer science, electrical and mechanical engineering. AI, machine learning, and other computer science aspects are used to operate robots. Robotics are used to build cars, perform intricate procedures and do some dangerous tasks such as bomb dispersal. The estimates suggest that the robotics sector would be $260 dollars by 2030. A bachelor’s degree along with some extra external courses can brace a candidate up for a job in the robotics industry. The job profiles of candidates who have studied robotics can be Robotics engineers, system analysts, algorithm engineers, data scientists, etc. The average salary of a fresh robotics graduate in India can be between 1.8 -and 7.4 LPA.

Quantum Computing

Quantum Computing is a massively emerging technology that addresses issues at the atomic and subatomic levels by using high-performance computers. The quantum computers, unlike the regular computers, use quantum bits called qubits to store data and execute calculations. Big tech companies such as Google and IBM are making progress in quantum computing but the field is still in its early stages. Banking and transportation are the other fields that can benefit from quantum computing. It holds promise for developing sustainable technology and solving environmental issues. It also plays a major role in the drug discovery pipeline in the research field for pharmaceuticals by providing the details of the interaction of the drug and the target. A master’s or doctorate degree is commonly required in this field for some good job profiles such as quantum computer architect, quantum software developer, quantum algorithm researcher, etc. More than India, other countries such as the USA can be a better option to pursue a career in quantum computing. The average yearly pay of the candidates in this field is $96,900.
