INDIAN SOCIETY FOR TECHNICAL EDUCATION

The Indian Society for Technical Education is a national professional non-profit making society registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860.First started in 1941 as Association of Principals of Technical Institutions (APTI), it was converted into “Indian Society for Technical Education” in 1968 with a view to enlarge its activities to advance the cause of technological education.

The major objective of ISTE is to assist and contribute in the production and development of top quality professional engineers and technicians needed by the industries and organizations.

Being the only national organization of education in the field of engineering and technology, ISTE effectively contributes in various missions of Union Government. The Ministry of Human Resources Development, AICTE/ DST/ MIT/ State Governments. are well associated with ISTE for programs relating to Technical Education.

The Major objectives of ISTE are:
  1. To formulate the general goals and responsibilities of technical education.
  2. To adjust educational and curriculum processes to changing conditions.
  3. To develop effective teachers and educational administrators.
  4. To improve instructional methods and practices & administrative usages.
  5. To enhance professional ideals & standards.
  6. To foster research as a function complementary to teaching.
  7. To cultivate fraternal spirit amongst the teachers, administrators, industrialists and professionals.
  8. To bring about effective linkage between technical institutions and industry and society.
  9. To award Honorary fellowships, Awards and Prizes, for furthering the objectives of education.
ISTE Chapter at CIET
We became Institutional Member of ISTE in the year 2005 and ISTE Students Chapter was established in 2007 with a very healthy membership. Over 55 members of the faculty are life members of ISTE.

Some of the important activities held at CIET under the aegis of ISTE are as under:-
ISTE Student’s Chapter Inaugural Ceremony (24th August, 2007):
Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology(CIET), held a function for formal inauguration of faculty and student's chapter of the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE).

Prof. K.L.Sapra, Dean Planning and Development, informed that the Chitkara Institute became the ISTE Institutional member since 2005 and now a students chapter has also been opened up. We have about 377 students from all the branches of Engineering as the members and all the eligible faculty members of CIET have also become Life Members of ISTE.

The function was marked by expert lectures by CIET faculty followed by a quiz contest and a debate competition amongst the students, on 'Employability of Engineering Graduates and How to Enhance". Dr. Madhu Chitkara, Vice Chancellor, Chitkara University, Punjab, distributed prizes to the winners.

 ISTE Students’ Section (Punjab, J&K, Himachal Pradesh & Chandigarh) Convention, Aviral – 08 on Saturday,
    8th November, 2008.
The ISTE Students’ Section (Punjab, J&K, Himachal Pradesh & Chandigarh) Convention was held at the Chitkara Institute of Engineering & Technology, Rajpura, on Saturday, the 8th November, 2008.

In the Inaugural session, Shri J.K.Menon, Managing Director, DCM Engg Ltd., Nawanshahr, was the Chief Guest and Dr. Ashok Chitkara, Chairman, Chitkara Educational Trust, presided over the function. Dr. D.S. Hira, Member, Section Executive Committee, was the Guest of honour.

There was a heavy participation from the students of technical institute from the states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Chandigarh (UT), for all the eight events forming part of the convention.

In his inaugural address, Shri Menon apprised the students about the challenges they have to face when they complete their curriculum of formal education. He tried to dispel the notion that the job market is shrinking and told that ample opportunities are available for the competent people. But in this age of rising and stiff competition, students must broaden their knowledge base, since knowledge is the greatest STRENGTH. He explained how Japan, which was totally dependent on imported technologies till 1960's, transformed itself into a powerful nation by strengthening their R&D. He expressed his happiness and appreciation at achievements of the Chitkara Institute of Engg. & Technology, which has made phenomenon progress within just six years of its establishment. He added that under the dynamic leadership of a visionary like Dr. Ashok Chitkara, the trust has a bright future.

Shri K.L.Sapra, Faculty Advisor, ISTE Students Chapter, gave a brief overview of the roles and objectives of ISTE and the activities carried out at CIET since establishment of the chapter. He explained that the Students Chapter was formally inaugurated on the 24th August, 2007 and the students have been taking active part in numerous events organised at different institutes as well as this institute and won laurels. He added that in the field of R&D, the students of the institute have participated in All India Level Competition organized by the National Design & Research Forum (NDRF) of the Institute of Engg at Bangalore and our students has bagged Gold and Silver Medals in the same. Also our Institute was ranked among the top 50 Private Engineering Colleges of the country as per a survey carried out by C-Fore Mint and published in 'The Hindustan Times' of 17-06-2008.

Dr. D.S.Hira, member of ISTE Section Executive Committee, appreciated the efforts of CIET and various initiatives towards nurturing various activities including organizing of the Section Convention. He added that ISTE is the biggest professional body for Technical Education in the country and students and faculty must make use of the resources of this body.

Student participants from various Institutes from the Institutes in the states of Punjab, J&K, HP and Chandigarh took active part in all the major events forming part of the Convention.The events were as under:

  • Project Display
  • Quiz
  • AUTOCAD drafting ( AUTOCAD-07 )
  • Web Designing
  • Debate “ We, the People ….”
  • Code Analysis and debugging
  • Poster Making
In the valedictory function, held in the afternoon, Dr. Ashok Chitkara, Chairman, Chitkara Educational Trust delivered, in a very interesting and absorbing manner, excellent advice to the students for developing confidence, concentration and positive attitude to achieve success and fulfill their ambitions. He gave away the prizes and congratulated all those who have participated in different events. He also advised all student members of ISTE to continue organizing such events for better sharing and enriching of the knowledge.

SHORT TERM TRAINING PROGRAMME ( STTP ) on Mechanical Measurements , sponsored by AICTE and ISTE
A five day Short Term Training Programme on Mechanical Measurements was sponsored by AICTE and ISTE and conducted at CIET from 23rd.March to 27th. March,2009 with thirty participants from all over the country. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Madhu Chitkara, Vice Chancellor, Chitkara University, Punjab. In his key-note address, Prof. KL Sapra, in his key-note address,brought out, in a lucid manner, the importance of measurements in general and mechanical measurements in particular.

The programme included expert lectures on a number of interesting topics like surface texture measurements, optical interferometry and precision engineering, etc.The programme also included an industrial visit to the works of HMT at Pinjore.In the valedictory function held on the 27th. March, certificates were awarded by Wg Cdr RS Gill, Director, Administration and Prof. Archana Mantri, Director, Academics.

Event ‘ Junkyard Samurai ’ organised as a part of PRAUDYOGIKII, 2010, The Annual Technical Festival of CIET .

This event was conducted under the aegis of ISTE and had a record participation of 97 teams, each consisting of four members, from a large number of Engineering Institutes. The event was conducted in three phases as under :-

Phase I:-
This was a written test consisting of Objective type questions on technical topics, aptitude test and General Knowledge. A total of 26 teams were short listed out of this test.

Phase II :-
This comprised a theme based Poster Presentation competition. A total of 10 teams were short listed.

Phase III :-
This was the final round and the competing teams were asked to design and execute a scheme out of the junk material provided in the junkyard. Participants’ innovativeness, creativity and speed of action were the hallmarks of this round.

The team from IET, Bhaddal got the I prize of Rs. 15,000 while that from the Indo Swiss Training Institute, Chandigarh got the II prize of Rs. 5,000.
