INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS

The Institution of Engineers (India) was registered under the Indian Companies Act, 1913 in the year 1920 and was formally inaugurated in 1921 by Lord Chelmsford, the then Viceroy and Governor General of India. It was granted the Royal Charter of Incorporation 1935 by His Majesty the King George V of England in 1935, “to promote and advance the science, practice and business of engineering in all its branches in India”. With this humble beginning, The Institution of Engineers (India) is now a unique professional body encompassing 15 engineering disciplines with an overall membership of over 0.5 million.

The Institution of Engineers (India), with its headquarters in Kolkata, India, is administered by a National Council with the President as its Head, and operates through 94 State and Local Centers, located at capital cities and towns of industrial and academic importance all over the country, and five Overseas Chapters (Abu Dhabi, Baharain, Dubai, Kuwait, and Qatar). It also has bilateral agreements with 24 international institutions.

I.E.(I) Students Chapter at CIET
An official permission for opening the Students’ Chapter at CIET was received from the headquarters of I.E. (I) at Kolkata on July, 2009. History bears testimony to the fact that “nothing great has ever been achieved without enthusiasm”. The students from all branches of Engineering enrolled for the membership with great vigor and zeal, and soon the Chapter was formed with 220 student members. The Chapter operates branch wise. The Executive Committee was formed by e-polling with Conveners as follows:

Ms Anu Singla is the Adviser of the Students’ Chapter of I.E. (I).

Since the very beginning, IEI is known for imparting education par excellence by providing ample opportunities to the students for pro-active learning. Some of the important activities organized by Students’ Chapter are;
  • National Conference on Smart Energy- Generation, Promotion and Conservation, 2010
    The Students Chapter organized Digital Poster Presentation Competition and Project Showcase related to the theme of National Conference on Smart Energy - Generation, Promotion and Conservation, 2010, held on January 15-16, 2010.

    Digital Poster Presentation Competition
    26 Teams were registered and displayed their ideas/work related through Digital Posters. The students participated in the competition with full zeal and enthusiasm. The best three teams were awarded prizes worth Rs 5000/-, 3000/- & 2000/-.

    Project Showcase
    17 Teams were registered and displayed their Projects made on the theme of the Conference. The best two teams were awarded prizes worth Rs 5000/- & 3000/-. Er. R.P.Garg, Chairman Institution of Engineers (India), Punjab and Chandigarh State Centre, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest of the valedictory function. Mr. Pramod Palvalkar and Ms. Jaya Palvalkar from NVidia, Pune also graced the occasion with their benign presence. Dr. Madhu Chitkara, Vice Chancellor, Chitkara university, Punjab distributed Certificates to the participants and prizes to the winners of Project Showcase and Digital Poster Presentation.

  • Seminar on Solid Waste Management-
    The Punjab and Chandigarh State Centre of I.E.(I), invited students members to attend a Seminar on Solid Waste Management on February 19, 2010. Around 50 students of CSE, ECE, EE and ME accompanied by Ms Anu Singla, & Ms Rashpinder Kaur, participated in the seminar.
    Pulkit Jain, a 3rd year student of ECE gave the presentation on ‘Solid Waste Management-Waste to Wealth’ which was very well received by one and all.

  • VITRINE-Innovation Unleashed, a Digital Poster Presentation Competition during Tech-Fest “PRAUDYOGIKII’10”
    “Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable.” - William Pollard

    With this theme Digital Poster Presentation Competition- VITRINE-Innovation Unleashed was organized on March 15th-16th, 2010. The event got an overwhelming response with 32 entries from different colleges of North India for the first round- which was a PowerPoint Presentation round. Out of which 10 teams were short listed for the final round where they were asked to display their models, handouts or posters presenting their work. The teams were judged on the basis of the quality of the models, utility and presenting skills. The 1st prize worth Rs 15000/- was bagged by the team from MM Engineering College, Mullana and second prize worth Rs 5000/- was won by the team from Chandigarh Engineering College, Landran.

  • Inauguration of Student Chapter of ‘The Institution of Engineers (India)’ in Chitkara Campus
    Er R.P.Garg, Chairman, Institution of Engineers (India), Punjab and Chandigarh State Centre inaugurated the Student Chapter in Chitkara Campus on 16th March, 2010. The function was attended, among others, by Mr. Jagroop Singh and Mr. HCS Berry, Former Chairmen of the Centre, Mr. M.N. Sharma, Honorary Secretary, Mr. A.S. Bakshi, Honorary Joint Secretary of the State Centre and Wg. Cmdr. R.S. Gill Director Administration and Prof. R.P.Sharma, Dean Research and Development of Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology.

    The splendor with which the events were organized and executed by Students Chapter of I.E. (I), CIET is grandeur personified. So keeping up with its name, I.E. (I) Students Chapter won the title of “The Best Students Chapter of CIET for 2009-10” on March 16th, 2010 giving a “stunning example” of what talent, ingenuity and hard work can accomplish.
